York Schulich BBA Admissions Process
The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program at Schulich is a 4-year program designed to prepare students in all aspects of business management, including accounting, marketing, and finance, while also giving them the opportunity to take other elective courses in other key areas of business.
REMEMBER: While we will primarily focus on the York Schulich BBA program in this guide, the applications for the BBA and iBBA programs are the same. Keep reading to learn more about the differences between these programs to make sure you’re choosing the right one for you.
York Schulich Application Criteria
There are two criteria that you must meet to be eligible to apply for the York Schulich BBA program.
These are:
- Academic performance: When applying, you must submit your Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC) application, primarily to show that you have completed the necessary course prerequisites and have met the cut-off average requirements (more on this below).
- Supplementary Application: This is arguably the most important part of your application because it gives you the opportunity to show the admissions committee who you are beyond your grades. Writing a Supplementary Application can be tricky, so keep reading for all our strategies and tips.
York Schulich Requirements
To apply to York Schulich BBA, you need to have completed these course prerequisites in Grade 12:
Mandatory Courses/Requirements |
OSSD |
English (ENG4U), Advanced Functions (MHF4U), and one of either Calculus (MCV4U) or Data Management (MDM4U) |
No more than two 4M courses |
Minimum of 70% in MHF4U and ENG4U |
You must submit your top 6 Grade 12 course grades, including ENG4U, MHF4U, and MCV4U and/or MDM4U.
REMEMBER: If you haven’t completed your Grade 12 courses, or you only have midterm marks in these courses, don’t panic! When this happens, your evaluators will look at the Grade 12 courses you have completed. If the incomplete courses are prerequisites for the program, the 3U equivalents will be considered until your 4U grades are available.
Also remember that repeated courses and failed courses are accepted. The admissions committee will consider the course with the highest grade (and this might not be the most recently taken course). For both repeated courses and failed courses, the course with the highest grade will be reviewed.
York Schulich Entrance Average
To be competitive, students should finish Grade 12 with at least an average that is in the high-80s or low-90s to be considered for admission to York Schulich.
But, to be really competitive against other applicants, we recommend an average of 92% or higher.
While you certainly have a shot of acceptance if you have a high 80% average, having a really strong Supplementary Application can mean the difference between admission success and failure.
If you want to make your Supplementary Application stronger, you need to showcase your outstanding leadership skills, while highlighting your interests, skills, and experiences. Not sure how? Connect with a coach to discuss all of this and more.
Number of Applications to York Schulich
With around 7,000 applicants per year (and approximately 425-495 people getting accepted each year), York Schulich is a highly competitive program and acceptance can be difficult.
Fortunately, having good grades and using strategies to create a standout Supplementary Application can help set you apart from the crowd.

York Schulich BBA Acceptance Rate
As mentioned above, 7,000 students apply to York Schulich BBA every year, and the admission committee accepts approximately 425-495 students per year.
That means that the York Schulich acceptance rate is approximately 6%-7%.
York Schulich Application Deadline
The deadline for the 2023/2024 York Schulich Application (i.e. for students starting the program in Fall 2024), the OUAC Application for direct-entry Ontario (101) and non-Ontario (105) high school applicants is January 12, 2024.
The deadline for York Schulich BBA’s Supplementary Application is February 1, 2024.

In the meantime, you can check on the status of your application using your MyFile account.
If you are a Delayed Entry Applicant, you can expect your conditional offer to arrive at the beginning of the Summer term. You MUST also complete the SB/ACTG 2021 3.00 and SB/ACTG 2011 3.00 during the Summer term to be admitted into the program.
York Schulich Supplementary Application & Interview
The Schulich Supplementary Application gives the admissions committee a chance to know you better and allows you to showcase your experiences, interests, and goals. Put simply, it helps them understand who you are and decide if you will make a good fit for the program.
Once you have applied to Schulich via OUAC, you will get an email invitation (after November 16, 2023) giving you the details to access your Supplementary Application.
Once you click the “Check In” button, you can get started on your Supplementary Application (keep reading for a step-by-step breakdown of how to complete and submit it).
The Schulich BBA Supplementary Application is made up of two parts:
- Part 1: Leadership Profile
- Part 2: Timed Video and Written Questions
COACH’S TIP: While you might have great grades coming out of Grade 12, your Supplementary Application is the difference maker. It will help you stand out, BUT ONLY if you use specific strategies, like our Narrative Communication Approach™, to write answers that are unique, memorable, and authentic. Connect with a coach to learn more.
Part 1: York Schulich BBA Leadership Profile
The Leadership Profile can be seen as a type of resume for that highlights all your hard work and experiences from high school.
It should include up to 5 activities. These can be your extracurriculars, such as student clubs, conferences you attended or presented at, volunteer work, sports teams, paid employment and internships, and/or entrepreneurial ventures.
It will also ask you to list the names of references who Schulich can contact to learn more about the role you played.
The Leadership Profile template looks like this:
Access this blank template we created here, and read our York Schulich App Prep Guide for a complete breakdown of how to write your Leadership Profile, as well as some useful examples to get your started.
As you can see, you’ll be asked for the following information for each activity:
- Activity Title: Give a brief snapshot of what the activity is (and keep it short).
- Your Role: State your position/title and what you did.
- Learning Outcomes: Discuss what you learned as a result of taking part in this activity.
- Referee Contact Information: List your reference’s name, role, email, and telephone number.
For the Learning Outcomes section, you must describe the activity, what you learned, and how it shaped you as a leader, and how you will use this learning moving forward — all in 1,000 characters or less (including spaces)!
COACH’S TIP: Don’t feel like you need to complete all 5 activities just to fill the space. Two or three really strong activities that have an organized, compelling, and unique Learning Outcome are much better than five activities with average Learning Outcome sections.
Try to discuss something that isn’t super obvious (like “I learned that hard work pays off”). You want to show that admissions committee that you can think deeper and that this experience has had a deep impact on you and how you interact with the world.
You also want to provide a deeper insight and discuss why this learning is important and how it can be applied to your life today (and in the future).

Part 2: Schulich Interview Questions
REMEMBER: You must complete your Leadership Profile BEFORE you move on to the timed written/video questions. You will NOT be able to go back and complete it.
In this section of your Supplementary Application, you will be given 4 randomly generated video questions and 1 randomly generated timed written question.
You will have a set amount of time to complete your answers.
For each video question, you will get 45 seconds to think about your answer, followed by 90 seconds to answer it. If you finish your response before the 90 seconds is done, you can simply click “Submit” and move on to the next question.
For the written question, you will get 5 minutes to prepare and write your answer.
This part of your Supplementary Application will take about 20-30 minutes to complete.
You will need a desktop computer with internet and webcam capabilities.
If this seems overwhelming, DON’T WORRY.
For both the timed video question and written questions, Schulich’s system allows for unlimited practice sessions.
But remember that, once you start the formal interview questions, you only get ONE chance.
Keep reading for tips on how to prepare for these questions and how to submit them.
Tips for the York Schulich Interview Questions
Many students ask us for tips for about preparing for the York Schulich interview.
Schulich is looking for students who are articulate, passionate, and dedicated. They also want to see that you can work well with a team, have the drive to succeed in the program, and are a critical thinker.
If you are able to convey these qualities in your video and written answers, it can help you stand out from the crowd.
How? Follow these tips!
TIP #1: USE YOUR TIME WISELY
You get five minutes total to complete your timed written questions. This isn’t very long, so it’s important to make the most of the time you do have.
Break your time into 3 parts:
- Think and prep (1.5 min.): Use about two minutes to prepare for the question. Think about a unique and intelligent answer and jot down a quick outline of how you can answer it. Having a plan to present your answers will show your critical thinking and problem solving abilities.
- Write your answer (3 min): Write down your answer. Don’t forget to breathe and think about what you’re writing. They aren’t expecting you to write too much (there is a 350 word limit for each question). There’s nothing worse than an essay that breaks off mid-sentence because you ran out of time. Be clear and be concise.
- Review (30 seconds): Use the last 30 seconds to quickly review your answer, checking for obvious typos or grammatical mistakes.
TIP #2: STAY CALM
The timed video and written questions can seem scary. The best thing you can do is take a deep breath, focus, and get the job done.
Be confident and be yourself.
This part of your Supplementary Application is meant to show the admissions committee who you are, so don’t get flustered or intimated.
If preparation eases your anxiety, open up your camera a few days before the interview and practice speaking while being recorded. We’ve got a ton of sample questions in our York Schulich BBA Leadership Profile Examples & Video/Written Questions Guide that you can use to help you prepare.
Before you record the final version of your video question, use the practice video questions as much as you need to help you feel comfortable. You get unlimited tries, so take advantage of them before recording your final video. Keep reading below to learn how to access the practice questions.
TIP #3: THINK AHEAD
While you won’t know exactly what the questions will be, you can still think about general questions you might be asked.
For example, questions like “Why Schulich?” or “How Have Your Experiences Made You Want to Study Business?” are pretty common.
Coming up with answers to these questions in advance will not only help you be more prepared, but they’ll get rid of some of your anxiety when it’s time to give your answers for real.
COACH’S TIP: Don’t memorize your answers beforehand. This will come across as inauthentic and over practiced. Instead, come up with some talking points and know the themes you are trying to communicate. Get started on those by reading our York Schulich BBA Leadership Profile Examples and Video/Written Questions Guide here.
TIP #4: BE PROFESSIONAL (BUT ALSO HAVE FUN)
When preparing for your video questions make sure that you come across as a young professional with something special to offer the program.
How can you do this?
- Dress professionally
- Make sure the background behind your camera is empty
- Go somewhere that is quiet and free from distractions
- Maintain eye contact with the camera as you give your answers
While it’s important to be professional, it’s also important to have fun with these questions. The admissions committee wants to admit unique people who have a shining personality and the experiences to match.
Show them who you are and be yourself.
TIP #5: DIFFERENTIATE YOURSELF
The admissions committee reviews thousands of applications. You’ll never stand out if your answers are the same as everyone else’s, so come up with answers that are unique.
For example, if there’s a question that asks “Describe a time when you had to adapt” don’t simply talk about how COVID made everything more difficult. Instead, you can talk about a leadership experience where you took on a challenge and tried something that hadn’t been done before. Then, shift the question into talking about your successes and what you learned from the experience.
Trying to come up with a different approach is important and you should only resort to these easy answers if you get stuck. Using storytelling to create an emotional connection with the reviewers can also make a huge difference in creating a unique, authentic, and memorable application. Check out this blog about our Narrative Communication Approach™ to learn more.

How To Get Into York Schulich
“How can I get into York Schulich BBA?! It’s such a competitive program!” We hear this ALL the time from students.
Although it might seem like getting into this top-tier is almost impossible, understanding exactly what exactly the admissions committee is looking for can help you create the best application possible.
You also have to remember that Schulich gets thousands of applications every year. Because of this, you need to make the extra effort to make sure your Leadership Profile and interview answers are memorable, unique, and authentic. You also need to show who you are by giving as much personal insight as possible. Talk about your experiences, your goals, lessons you’ve learned along the way, and what makes you, you.
Not sure how to incorporate all these things into your application? Check out our York Schulich BBA App Prep Guide to learn about creating a unique application that gets noticed.
Here’s some information on how the York Schulich supplementary application is evaluated so you can increase your chances of getting in. Want some more insight into the evaluation process? Connect with a coach to find out more.
WHO READS THE YORK SCHULICH SUPPLEMENTARY APPLICATIONS?
Schulich’s admissions committee reviews all of the applications to their program.
However, the admissions committee receives some input from student assessors, who are usually (but not always) York Schulich MBA students. Schulich employs them to evaluate Supplementary Applications.
At the end of the day, Schulich’s admissions committee has the last word about who gets accepted.
HOW ARE YORK SCHULICH’S APPLICATIONS EVALUATED?
Evaluators look at both your grades and your Supplementary Application. Both are equally important (i.e. if you have low grades, having a high grade on your Supplementary Application won’t compensate).
There is an equal grade weight between your Leadership Profile and the Timed Written and Video Questions.
WHAT ARE THE EVALUATORS AT YORK SCHULICH LOOKING FOR?
When evaluating your Supplementary Application, the Schulich BBA admissions committee looks for these things:
- Leadership potential
- Verbal and written communication skills
- Critical thinking
- Problem solving skills
- Preparation
- Professionalism
- Drive and motivation
- An explanation of your experiences and how they shaped who you are
- Evidence that you have done your research and know about the York Schulich BBA program
There are standard answers for questions like: “Why do you want to go to Schulich?” Your evaluators don’t want to get an answer that you think they want to hear or an answer that is identical to everyone else’s.
Try to be different, and relate your answers to an experience you’ve had, and show why Schulich is right for you.
Your evaluators want to see that you have strong communication skills and that you’re self aware and have clear goals. Not sure how to convey these things? Connect with a coach to get started.
Grades vs. Supplementary Applications
When evaluating your application to Schulich BBA, the admissions committee will look at both your grades and your Supplementary Application.
Grades and your Supplementary Application are weighted equally.
Your grades tell the admissions committee about your academic potential, while your Supplementary Application tells them things they can’t know from grades alone, like leadership potential, problem solving and critical thinking skills, etc.
You should have an average of high-80s or low-90s at least to be considered.
Your Supplementary Application, on the other hand, should be organized, unique, and insightful. This will tell them not only who you are as a student, but what you will contribute to their program if they accept you.
How to Complete and Submit the Schulich Supplementary Application
First, you must complete an application for the Schulich BBA (or iBBA) program on the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC) site.
When this is done, you will receive an email invitation (from info@yorku.ca) within 72 hours to complete your Supplementary Application.
In this email, you will find a link to the external video platform, where you will submit your Leadership Profile and complete your timed video and written questions.
Step 1: When you get the email, you must check in. To do this, simply click “Check In” on the main welcome page.
REMEMBER: As mentioned previously, you cannot access your Supplementary Application until November 16, 2023 or after. If you completed the OUAC application before this, you won’t get the email invite to start your Supplementary Application until after November 16.
Step 2: Watch the Welcome Video before you start anything, just so you become familiar with the platform and you know exactly what to do.
Step 3: Next, click the “Registration” button and enter all of your information.
SUBMITTING THE LEADERSHIP PROFILE
Step 4: Upload your Leadership Profile.
As mentioned above, you must submit your Leadership Profile BEFORE your timed video and written questions.
You will not be able to proceed to the timed video and written questions without first uploading your Leadership Profile.
When you receive the email with your York Reference Number, you will also be given a link to download the Leadership Profile template.
Once downloaded, you can input your answers directly into the document.
COACH’S TIP: We recommend having your Leadership Profile written before you download the template. A few weeks before you plan to submit your application, write your answers in a Word Doc or Google Doc, and then simply copy them into the PDF once you download the template. This will give you more time to think about your answers, edit your work, and make changes if you need to. To make things easier, we’ve created a Leadership profile example and template, available here.
When you’ve completed the PDF, you must upload it to the external video platform system. To do this, click the ‘Supplemental Materials’ tab (this is under ‘Registration’).
Then, click the “Leadership Profile” button on the “Upload Your Files” page and attach the PDF.
COACH’S TIP: Make sure that you are completely happy with the version of your Leadership Profile before you click submit because you will NOT be able to come back to it after you have completed your timed video/written questions.
SUBMITTING THE TIMED VIDEO AND WRITTEN QUESTIONS
Step 5: Once you have submitted your Leadership Profile, you will be asked to complete the second part of your application.
As mentioned above, the timed video and written questions are completed through the video interview platform.
USING THE VIDEO INTERVIEW PLATFORM
The Video Interview Platform is invitation only, online interviewing platform that uses text and video questions. You will NOT interact with live people.
Instead, you will get text or video questions and then provide the corresponding answers.
REMEMBER: The video interview platform gives you prep time for the video questions, but the time for the written questions begins immediately.
Before starting the questions, read the instructions that Schulich gives you carefully. These can be found in the email you receive one you submit your OUAC application.
Next, complete the device setup to ensure that your camera and microphone are working properly (this is Step 4 in the process we mentioned above).
Then you will have the chance to practice your video and written questions (Step 5), so you can get more comfortable with the platform.
You will be able to practice the video and written questions. Once you’re ready, it’s time to complete the video and written questions for real! Here’s a quick snapshot of everything we’ve covered to make things easier to remember:
Video Questions:
- You will complete 4 video questions.
- Before you record your final video answers, you will have practice questions you can use to get comfortable with the process.
- You can practice as many times as you want, using up to 5 sample questions.
- Once you are ready to record your final questions, you will have 45 seconds to plan your response and then up to 90 seconds to record it.
- You only have one chance to record your final video.
Written Questions:
- You get 5 minutes total to answer 1 question.
- Split the time you’re given into 3 sections: Think and prep (1.5 min), Write your answer (3 min), and Review (30 seconds). Read more about each step above.
- Write your answer directly onto the webpage and stay under the 350 word limit.
COACH’S TIP: When answering your video and written questions, remember to be consistent, concise, and unique. Creating an emotional connection with your reader will also make your answers more memorable, and increase your chances of admissions success. To learn how to structure your answer using the five components of our effective Narrative Communication Approach™, check out this blog. This approach works for your video question too!

Common Questions From Students About York Schulich BBA
What are the differences between the BBA and iBBA programs?
The biggest thing that will determine if you should apply to the BBA or iBBA programs is if you’re interested in international business.
The International Bachelor of Business Administration (iBBA) is a program that is meant for students who want to work abroad after graduation or want to learn more about business from an international perspective.
The iBBA program is a 4-year program, where students learn about business through many lenses. You will take internationally-focused core courses, regionally focused electives, study a second language, and complete a mandatory exchange program.
The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program, on the other hand, offers students a strong foundation in all aspects of general management. While you can learn about international business or do an optional exchange program, international business isn’t the program’s main focus. In the BBA program, the course offerings are also more flexible and you do not need to learn a second language if you don’t want to.
Admission criteria is the same for both programs, and your odds of acceptance for both are the same.
Can I apply to both BBA and iBBA?
The admissions committee will only evaluate ONE application, so make sure you apply to the program you are most interested in.

Is York Schulich BBA a good program?
York Schulich BBA is a great program because it gives students a strong foundation in all aspects of general management.
If you are looking for a program where you can learn about many different aspects of business, this program is for you.
You will also learn about important things like international business, how business needs change, while developing important skills like interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and communications skills.
There are also 10 areas of specialization, which makes the program good for students who are still exploring what they’re interested in. In Years 1 and 2, you have the opportunity to see what you like, and then in Year 3 you can choose one or two specializations.
This means that not only will you get a holistic education about general business management, but you can become an expert in one or two areas including accounting, marketing, and finance.
One thing that really stands out about this program is the option to take part in an exchange program (for a summer term or full term) in one of Schulich’s 63 partner schools. This will help you explore what you’re interested in and apply it to a global context — which will ultimately open up many doors when you’re looking for a job after graduation.
Finally, Schulich BBA is a great program because it gives you the opportunity to take part in new experiences and build strong leadership skills outside of the classroom.
With clubs like the Undergraduate Business Society (UBS) and the Undergraduate Case Studies, you can apply what you’ve learned and gain real world experiences that will benefit you when you graduate.
Is York Schulich BBA hard?
Like most other business programs, the Schulich BBA program will require a lot of work and dedication.
If your grades coming out of Grade 12 reach the cut-off for admissions (i.e. high-80s to low-90s), you likely already have the dedication it takes to succeed in this program.
While the transition from high school to university is definitely difficult for most students, Schulich has a very friendly and helpful faculty and staff who can help you as you progress through the program.
A great thing about Schulich is that in your first year you will be a part of the Schulich Ambassador Program, where you’ll be assigned a person who can help teach you everything you need to know about developing your skills as a leader and young professional.
REMEMBER: Learning to adapt to all types of situations, reaching out for help when you need it, and having confidence in your abilities can help ensure that you do well in the program.

York Schulich BBA vs. Other Programs
York Schulich BBA vs. Western Ivey HBA
Ivey HBA is one of the few schools that uses almost exclusively the case-method of learning. This means that you won’t simply listen to lectures and take notes, but you will experience more than 400 real-world business cases. This hands-on approach is good if you prefer experiential learning, where you can directly apply what you’re learning.
It is important to note that the HBA program is a two year, accelerated program that students take after already completing two years (or more) years of university. As such, the AEO (Advanced Entry Opportunity) is effectively an early conditional acceptance and still requires AEO students to reapply in their second year. This setup might be preferred by students who want to take two years of an entirely different program before finishing their degree in business. York Schulich BBA, however, your first two years are foundational, and your last two years are based on a chosen specialization.
York Schulich BBA vs. University of Toronto Rotman Commerce
If you are still exploring your areas of interest, Rotman is a great choice because it offers you a lot of flexibility and the ability to take a wide variety of electives in their Faculty of Arts and Science.
Rotman’s program is more similar to York’s since the first year is what’s called a foundational year, where students get a broad range of exposure, but then starting in second year, they choose a specialization, with Schulich students choosing their speciality in year 3. That being said, Rotman’s curriculum is more math and finance heavy than that of Schulich.
York Schulich BBA vs. UBC Sauder Commerce
UBC Sauder Commerce is set up in a very similar way to Schulich BBA in that the first two years are more foundational, with years 3 and 4 being based on a specialization.
That being said, there are quite a few courses that UBC does in year 1 that Schulich does in year 2, for example. But, overall the UBC Sauder program has more advanced math centric courses being a BCom vs. a BBA.

York Schulich BBA vs. Queen’s Commerce (Smith School of Business)
Smith uses a combination of case based and lecture based teaching methods, so a bit of a hybrid between York and Ivey in that sense.
Given Smith is also a BCom, the curriculum is more math centric than Schulich.
Another important distinction is there isn’t a formal specialization track like with Sauder, Schulich, or Rotman. However, there are plenty of electives in various areas of interest, just no credit requirements to complete a specialization.
